And There Was War London 2017 Review

Opening Scene

Immanuel

Imagine seeing light beams ping pong around you, as if they are life forms springing past
your body, jumping from one place to another. Then add the sound of speed and hear
sounds whizz so fast that your eyes and ears just can't keep up and you’re full of
excitement wondering what’s going to happen next....
Well, imagine this as the opening scene, an artistic representation of the views from
Heaven when the early works of Creation were being created.

Just as the title reads And There Was War’  highlighted the conflict between Immanuel (played by Thomas Ababio) and Lucifer (played by Lloyd Reid).

I think sometimes as Christians or those who have read the Bible, we are already aware that there was a war in Heaven, but we don't really take it a step further to analyse the thoughts and words
which may have been exchanged between the highest ranking Angel and the Creator. The
dialogue between the two is like a child to its parent, who asks their father if they can be
involved in the things the dad is doing, but in this case to help them create life. The way in
which Lucifer is consistently denied the opportunity can almost lead the viewer to side with
him. There’s an emotional tug to feel empathy towards him, because in his eyes, as he
puts it “I just want to help”. But underneath the emotional ties, you realise his motives are
driven by jealousy and him not wanting to be left out. The way in which he single handedly
tries to bamboozle the Seraphim on the same guilt trip is interesting, eventually taking a
third of the angels with him.

There are four main Bible stories neatly woven between the heavenly scenes, bringing the
characters to life and allowing the audience to really think and consider what they may
have done in those situations. - It truly is food for thought. I felt real emotions and heard
real questions. The way a mother reacts to her young daughter when she tells her that
she's pregnant, of which is no fault of her own. The dispute between two brothers that leads
to a fatal death, which may not have been intentional - but makes us realise what anger
and hate can lead to. The feeling that Adam must have felt when he realised what Eve had
done, yet he still made the decision to walk the path with her. Adam’s character (played by
Romario Simpson) truly expressed the pain in his heart as he cried and moaned in anguish.

It’s one of those performances which taps into your mind, knocks on your heart and even
makes you laugh out loud!

An easy to follow storyline for the believer and non believer alike. Surprisingly appropriate
for all ages, with killer choreographed moves (which seemed to get the kids excited) and
those heavenly scenes with it’s musical backdrop of awe and wonder.
Considering there were minimal props used and no visual backdrops, the way in which the
floor space was utilised by the cast, the lighting and music were all just right in setting the
scene for the viewer to allow their minds to be carried on a journey with the characters.
Nothing was over the top, over done or unnecessary.

Mary & her Mother

Mary & Mother

Definitely a performance to watch with family, friends or even if you’re on a date ;-)
I wouldn't say it’s one of those plays that make you ‘feel good’, but one of self evaluation
and aspiration. I can honestly say I came away feeling changed with a mindset of wanting
to be more intentional in my everyday life.

Meet the ATWW Cast

2017 is fast approaching and the first of our ATWW tour will be hitting Birmingham on the 28th January. But before we get to that, let's just rewind a minute and savour this little moment... So, we've got a great cast of people, but do you actually know them? Well, we thought we'd give you a little inside scoop on who these talented individuals are. - Almost like a 'through the key hole' meets Cilla Black's 'Blind Date'.

So, without further ado let's get the ball rolling...

Name: David

Name: David

1/ He loves to travel and enjoys new experiences... OK, let me stop right there! - Sorry single ladies, this one's taken and he's staying put. A family man, father to a wonderful daughter and loving partner to a special woman.

Name: Hannah

Name: Hannah

2/ "I can be a shy person on odd occasions but most of the time you'll see me in the middle making the most noise...” Well, I'm sure this lady will be making the most noise in all the right places! She's studying Drama, Applied Theatre and Performance at University. With the hopes of eventually teaching drama in a special needs school. - You go girl!

Name: Gjoshua

Name: Gjoshua

3/ He's both introverted and extroverted concurrently... so you might get a little tangled in this Bermudian web. Enjoys singing, artistic dance and his dietary preference is... wait for it... Vegan!

Name: Hakeem

Name: Hakeem

4/ It seems like this one couldn't resist - so he's back for a second time with FCP for ATWW. He'll be playing 'Abel' in our tour next year. He enjoys doing God's work by promoting His word and message.

Name: Oluchi

Name: Oluchi

5/ So this girl's a bit of an eater. A lover of all things good for the belly - 'Food, glorious food!'. But, besides her enormous passion for eating, she's been blessed with a gift, hoping to change lives one step at a time by pursuing drama to share stories.

Name: Thomas

Name: Thomas

6/ Well, he says he's not perfect... but he believes in the principles of God and tries to practice them. Always up for a good laugh and positive company - seems like he'll be great on any night out!

Name: Sarah

Name: Sarah

7/ This one's from the dirt south - South London that is! A lover of music, film and anything with chocolate in. She's hoping to do a degree in Sound Design (I never thought such a degree existed). And she's slightly obsessed with cats - hmmm... should we be worried?

Name: Kéana      (pronounced Kay-Anna)

Name: Kéana      (pronounced Kay-Anna)

8/ She has quite an unusual name... get it wrong once and she'll correct you, do it twice and she might not be as nice. One of five siblings and a go-getter. She's one of those uncomplicated kind of gal's and one who appreciates nature

Name: Claudine

Name: Claudine

9/ I liked this so much, I'm just going to let her take the stage. “A mother... and a grandma. Being ambitious, I thrive in taking passionate leaps and bounds towards my goals & dreams, which sometimes reveals my quixotic side! My wit may periodically rear its head, killing you with laughter - but never fear, being a paramedic I'll revive you... if I like you enough. Dining out, design and documentaries fill me with glee, and whilst I adore being around people, I also love time with ME!”.

Name: Rosetta

Name: Rosetta

10/ This one's a little all over the place (but in a good way!) Likes to keep active as well as watch athletics... a bit of a hiker (in different types of terrain), loves reading, creative writing and getting involved in charity projects. - How does she find the time to act?

12/ "Jamaica, Jamaica!"... Hats off to this small island for instilling that old school discipline in the life of this young man. 6 years of experience in that sunny land and he's more determined than ever, now back in the U.K studying at Identity Drama School of Acting.

 Name: Jermaine - Director/Writer

Name: Jermaine - Director/Writer

15/ "One of my secret loves is rom-coms [romantic comedies], and I always get real emotional at the end of sports movies... I can't help but shed a tear...” - Hmmm, I'm not sure how this will go down with your mates on a Saturday night though? #dontjudgeme

Name: Darryll

Name: Darryll

16/ Apparently God said no to him having two wives, so I'm afraid he's stuck with just the one! Enjoys being a family man with three children and likes the happier side of life.

Name: Lloyd

Name: Lloyd

17/ Another Jamaican connection - This one with a very close knit family. Seems like he wears two masks; an introvert (you wouldn't believe it were so!), a stark contrast to what he exudes when on stage. - I guess that's what makes him so interesting.

Name: Ally

Name: Ally

18/ She's not one of those boring bankers! She's a new breed of soca dancing, carnival going, drama loving, kind of bankers. - The ones who know how to work hard and play hard alike. This mum of 2 knows how to get down!

Name: Tremont

19/ Tall, dark and handsome… He’s one of those ‘ballers’, maybe even a shot caller. A fresh faced 18 year old who also happens to dabble in a little modelling too. #iwokeuplikethis
